Petronor has started construction of its e-fuels plant in the port of Bilbao, thereby marking a significant step in the energy transition. The first phase of this 160 million euro project will produce 2,000 tonnes of synthetic fuel per year, using as feedstock CO2 from refinery emissions and hydrogen produced by a 10 MW electrolyser in an adjacent plant.

The plant will initially run on a demonstration basis, with a view to assessing the feasibility of large-scale, efficient and competitive production of synthetic fuels. The final phase of the plant is expected to be commissioned in mid-2026.

The project partners are the Basque Energy Agency (EVE), Enagás Renovable in the annexed electrolysis plant, as well as the company Saudi Aramco, all of whom are committed to finding alternatives to oil as part of the energy transition towards carbon neutrality.
